Planning backward is a simple, but effective, approach to midterm and long-range planning. It is a very simple process utilizing the analogy of planning for a journey. Planning backward starts by identifying a long-term destination, charts a midterm directional course or route, and creates incremental, logical segments for the travel plan. The resulting product is a long-term vision, a midterm plan with specific objectives and a strategic approach to 12- to 24-month operational plans.
