The mission of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) is to promote the success of learning in higher education through the creative and transformative use of digital technology. It is a division of EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association and the foremost community of IT leaders and professionals committed to advancing higher education. The ELI’s guiding philosophy is that learning in higher education is best served when it is guided by a learner-centered focus, informed by learning principles and science, and by the creative and innovative application of digital technology.

As a community of higher education institutions, organizations, practitioners, the ELI is committed to learner-centered work and effective practice with a particular focus on:

  • the use of data and discoveries in the learning sciences to inform decision making;
  • the exploration of technology-enabled learning environments;
  • the support of both innovation and proven practice in online and blended learning;
  • faculty development and engagement. 

Recognizing that the advancement of learning calls for effective intra-institutional collaboration, the ELI engages with the full range of higher education senior teaching and learning leadership. This includes academic leaders in information technology, centers for teaching and learning, the library, as well as with senior leaders in academic divisions.

The ELI’s programs fall under two broad categories. First, in its role as a convener of the teaching and learning community, it offers a conference (the Annual Meeting), and a variety of on-line events, such as focus sessions, webinars, courses, and community discussion forums. It also produces a range of publications, such as its 7 Things You Should Know About series, the ELI project briefs, and its Seeking Evidence of Impact case study series. Second, it leads initiatives such as the annual Key Issues survey, the Learning Space Rating System, and Leading Academic Transformation.
